The SFU Community Coalition came together as a result of severe underfunding and substantive cuts by the BC Provincial Government to operating funding to SFU.
After the 2008 provincial budget was tabled and passed, the Government unilaterally reversed course from the minimal funding it promised and reduced the amount by over $6 million to colleges and universities.
This cut in funding has had immediate, drastic effects to SFU:
80 positions are being cut
Tutorials are being trimmed
Scholarships are being reduced
Fewer bursaries are available for needy students
Classrooms are ballooning
and more.
Community partners came together in October 2008 to start planning what a community response would be to these massive cuts. As a result, a rally was held February 4 2009 with over 1000 students, staff, professors and community members in attendance – one of the largest demonstrations in SFU’s 34 year history.
